Commission E Supports Restricting Children's Access to Social Media

The Ministry of Communication and Digital (Komdigi) officially issued Ministerial Regulation No. 9 of 2026, a derivative regulation of the Tunas Government Regulation (PP Tunas), which regulates restrictions on access by children under 16 to high-risk digital platforms, such as social media and networking services. This policy took effect on March 28, 2026.

increase public awareness

The regulation requires digital platforms to deactivate accounts belonging to children under 16 on popular services like TikTok, Instagram, and Roblox. This policy aims to protect children from various digital threats, including pornography and cyberbullying and potential device addiction.

Commission E Discusses Improving Public Health Services Quality

This move also places Indonesia as one of the first non-Western countries to implement a policy restricting social media access for children, to ensure that technological development does not compromise the growth and development of the younger generation.

Chairman of Jakarta City Council's Commission E, M Subki supports the policy. He believes that limiting and controlling the use of digital platforms is a positive step in protecting children from the negative impacts of technology.

"Hopefully this step can increase public awareness to be wiser in using digital technology and understand the impacts it can cause," he said, Monday (3/9).

Currently, Subki continued, there are various digital platforms that contain inappropriate content, such as violence, crime, and other dangerous material that should not be consumed by children.

"We see a tendency for children today to have a high level of dependence on gadgets. Therefore, government policies to limit and control the use of certain digital platforms are a very positive step," he added.

On the other hand, Subki acknowledged that the development of digital technology has brought many benefits to people's lives. Various activities have become easier thanks to technological advancements.

However, he reminded that technology should be used wisely, especially for children who are still growing.
