Commission B: Market Revitalization as a Model for Modernization

Jakarta City Council Commission B Vice Chairman, Wahyu Dewanto expressed his hope that the start of the Gardu Asem Market (Central Jakarta) and Kramat Jaya Market (North Jakarta) revitalizations would set an example for modernizing traditional markets across the city.

Traditional market modernization we all want

This project kicked off with a groundbreaking ceremony held by the Jakarta government, which is part of a larger initiative to modernize 153 traditional markets under the management of Perumda Pasar Jaya.

"Hopefully, this will set an example for the kind of traditional market modernization we all want, particularly for Jakartans,” he stated, Tuesday (4/7).

He stressed that a modern market concept should not just be about fancy buildings; instead, it should prioritize comfort, security, and the availability of facilities for visitors.

“The most important thing is a market that is safe and comfortable for shopping, where all the facilities are complete and in good working order,” he added.

Wahyu also pointed out that modernizing a market goes beyond just physical renovations. He noted, a shared commitment from both management and vendors is essential to ensure the market remains orderly, clean, and inviting.

“This commitment can begin with simple steps, like keeping stalls organized, maintaining cleanliness, and ensuring a pleasant atmosphere in the market area,” he stated.

Additionally, he is pushing for the implementation of cashless payment systems to boost safety and efficiency in market transactions.

Wahyu noted that such upgrades should start being applied to all markets even as they wait for physical renovations to take place in stages.

“I hope to see the transformation of Jakarta’s traditional markets materialize quickly, in tandem with the gradual physical rehabilitation process,” he added.
