Jakarta Plans to Increase Number of Free Schools

Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung reaffirmed the Jakarta administration’s commitment to prioritizing education for children in the city, including through the provision of free education at 103 private schools.

"If fiscal space allows, we will expand the program,"

"The free school program now covers 103 private schools, while public schools are already fully free," Pramono said at the Jakarta City Council (DPRD) building on Thursday (4/30).

Pramono said the policy has received full support from the Jakarta City Council and expressed optimism that the number of schools offering free education will be expanded if fiscal space allows, including Islamic schools.

"All council members have expressed full support, so if fiscal space allows, we will expand the program," he emphasized.

He noted that education is key to improving the quality of human resources in Jakarta, in line with the administration's vision of building a globally competitive city.

In addition to free schooling, the Jakarta administration will maintain various education assistance programs, including KJP, KJMU, and diploma amnesty.

"By providing free education at 103 private schools, we hope to further reduce the number of Jakarta children who cannot attend school due to financial constraints," he added.
