South Jakarta Government Continues to Intensify Waste Sorting

The South Jakarta City Government is intensifying the "Keep Jakarta Clean, Sort Waste" movement as an effort to address the waste problem following the limited capacity of the Bantar Gebang Landfill.

South Jakarta Vice Mayor, Ali Murthadho said it is hoped that this movement will become a value embedded in society so that the waste problem can be resolved starting from the household environment.

"Our efforts include public education coupled with direct action, so that Jakarta's waste problem can be resolved quickly," he said, Thursday (5/7).

Ali explained that the South Jakarta Environmental Sub-agency has also intensified the organic waste management program through a modern teba and jumbo biopore system.

"The South Jakarta City Government has requested that each RT have at least one large biopore hole," he added.

According to him, if around 6,000 neighborhood associations (RT) in South Jakarta implement this system, organic waste management can be carried out effectively through the zero organic waste concept.

"We also urge government offices to do the same," he continued.

Ali requested that district heads and urban village heads strengthen the empowerment of waste banks to handle inorganic waste such as plastic and similar materials. Developed waste banks need to foster other waste banks to optimize waste management.

Meanwhile, Head of South Jakarta Environmental Sub-agency, Dedy Setiono stated the waste management program using jumbo biopores and modern teba has been implemented in a number of locations, including Mampang Prapatan District and Tegal Parang Urban Village.

The program is expected to reduce waste disposal by 50 percent by August 2026. In fact, by 2027, South Jakarta is targeted to no longer dump waste at the Bantar Gebang Landfill.

"The fastest way to handle waste is to handle it on-site, eliminating the need to transport it all the way to Bantar Gebang. Hopefully, this innovation will work well," he stated.
