PSEL Project to Solve Jakarta's Waste Crisis, Says Pramono

Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung expressed optimism that the city’s long-standing waste issues will soon be resolved after the Jakarta government and Danantara Indonesia agreed to accelerate the construction of Waste-to-Energy (PSEL) facilities.

I want Jakarta to kick off this second batch

Pramono made the statement following the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) regarding the project's acceleration at the Coordinating Ministry for Food Affairs building in Central Jakarta on Monday (5/4).

Under the agreement, PSEL facilities with a processing capacity of 2,500 to 3,000 tons of waste per day will be developed in Bantargebang, West Java, and Tanjungan, North Jakarta.

Jakarta Govt, Danantara Ink Deal to Build Waste-to-Energy Facilities

"We have inked two agreements. The first is for Bantargebang, and the second is for Kamal Muara (Tanjungan)," he expressed, at the East Jakarta Mayor’s Office Complex, Wednesday (5/6).

Besides these two locations, the administration is preparing another PSEL facility in Sunter, North Jakarta, and is currently optimizing the Refuse Derived Fuel (RDF) plant in Rorotan.

Pramono is confident that the waste crisis, which has plagued Jakarta for years, will finally be put to rest once all these facilities are fully operational.

"Jakarta will have three Waste-to-Energy plants, plus the RDF facility in Rorotan. If everything is up and running, quite frankly, Jakarta's waste problem will be solved," he explained.

He went on to say that the Bantargebang PSEL facility will focus on processing the massive mounds of accumulated waste, aiming to gradually reduce the landfill's overall volume.

Interestingly, he even highlighted a potential "good problem" to have: a possible shortage of waste supply for raw materials once all PSEL and RDF plants are operating at peak capacity.

Following the partnership with Danantara, Pramono has instructed the Head of Environmental Agency and Assistant for Development to follow through immediately. The administration, he added, will soon finalize the contractors and construction timelines.

"I want Jakarta to kick off this second batch and, if possible, ensure it is completed as quickly as possible," he concluded.
