Illegal Dumpsite on Jalan RE Martadinata Transformed into a Park

A temporary waste disposal site (TPS) on Jalan RE Martadinata, Tanjung Priok, North Jakarta, has been revitalized and repurposed into a community park. The transformation aims to create a cleaner, more orderly, and comfortable environment for local residents.

the waste would have continued to accumulate

Tanjung Priok Sub-district Vice Head, Dwi Pandji Forkiantoro, stated that the location had long been misused by residents as a dumping ground. The site was deemed a nuisance and an eyesore, often emitting foul odors that disturbed the surrounding neighborhood.

"We have frequently appealed to residents, yet violations persisted. If left unaddressed, the waste would have continued to accumulate," he expressed, Wednesday (5/13).

He explained that the condition of the site was a serious concern, given its location on a primary road that will soon serve as a route for a new toll road. In response, sub-district and urban village authorities collaborated to landscape the 50-square-meter area into a green space.

The project involved several municipal units, including the Water Resources Agency (SDA), Parks and City Forest Agency, Public Works Agency, and Satpol PP.

"We'll continue to monitor and supervise illegal waste points throughout Tanjung Priok to ensure that trash accumulation does not recur," he added.

Tanjung Priok Urban Village Head, Febrio Eka Putra, noted that the revitalization was preceded by a socialization process with residents to reach a mutual solution.

He explained that while the site is now a garden, residents can still dispose of their household waste at designated drop points through a new scheduled system.

"Waste disposal is now permitted between 7 PM and 10 PM. The waste will then be promptly collected and transported by Environment Agency trucks," he continued.

To support this scheduled system, the urban village office has provided three garbage carts. Additionally, to prevent illegal dumping, a security post has been established, manned by PPSU personnel and Satpol PP personnel.

"We hope this system increases public awareness regarding environmental cleanliness and supports waste reduction programs across North Jakarta," he added.

Local resident Husen (57) expressed his support for the transformation and the new waste management system.

"The area is now much cleaner, tidier, and more comfortable. We hope all residents can work together to maintain this cleanliness so that trash never piles up here again," He stated.
