Jakarta Sets Measures for Safe, Hygienic, and Eco-Friendly Qurban

The Jakarta government has confirmed its readiness for the upcoming Eid al-Adha festivities, placing a strong emphasis on ensuring that the ritual of sacrificial animals is conducted in an orderly, hygienic, and environmentally friendly manner.

We're making the best possible preparations

Jakarta’s Assistant for Economy and Finance, Suharini Eliawati, stated that the local government has implemented several strategic measures to ensure the smooth execution of the holiday across the capital.

"Principally, we're making the best possible preparations. This covers not only the supply of sacrificial animals but also the overall management of the event—from Eid prayer arrangements and the slaughtering process to the distribution of meat to the community," she expressed, Wednesday (5/13).

She also emphasized the importance of using eco-friendly packaging for meat distribution, as part of the Jakarta government's commitment to reducing the plastic waste that typically surges during Eid al-Adha.

Further, the administration is encouraging all slaughterers to obtain "Halal Slaughterer" (Juleha) certification.

“This step is crucial to ensuring that the slaughtering process adheres to both Sharia (Islamic law) and health standards,” she explained.

Regarding oversight, she added that the Jakarta Food Security, Maritime, and Agriculture Agency (KPKP) has been conducting inspections since a month prior to the holiday. This multi-layered monitoring spans from local sub-district levels to various livestock sales points across the city.

“Supervision usually starts one month ahead. Our teams in the field will be deployed to verify animal health and ensure the feasibility of distribution,” she concluded.

Eliawati—affectionately known as Eli—noted that the Jakarta government has coordinated with supplying regions, such as Lampung and Central Java. Due to limited land availability, the capital remains dependent on external supplies to meet the demand for cattle, buffaloes, and goats.

“Coordination with supplying regions is already underway. We are also facilitating the necessary permits to ensure the distribution of sacrificial animals into Jakarta goes smoothly,” she said.

She added that the city-owned meat company Perumda Dharma Jaya plays a supporting role by providing livestock and slaughtering facilities. However, she clarified that the slaughtering mechanism at Dharma Jaya typically does not involve processing the meat into small, per-kilogram portions.

Instead, animals at Dharma Jaya are usually slaughtered and divided into large sections, such as quarters, before being handed over to the qurban committees for final distribution.

“With these extensive preparations, the Jakarta government hopes this year’s Eid al-Adha will be more orderly, healthy, and sustainable, while ensuring comfort for the public in performing their religious duties,” she concluded.
