Member of Commission B of the Jakarta City Council, Muhammad Al Fatih, supports the South Jakarta Transportation Sub-agency's steps to regulate illegal parking attendants through integrated operations in the Blok M area.
Illegal parking must not be allowed
The operation, which began with surveillance by the Parking UP team, is carried out to maintain public order while providing a sense of security and comfort for the public from disturbing illegal parking.
Jakarta Provincial Government Supports the Eradication of Illegal Parking"Illegal parking must not be allowed because it is detrimental to the community, creates a sense of insecurity, triggers traffic jams, and disrupts the order of public spaces," he said, Monday (5/25).
Al Fatih emphasized that the operation should not be merely a temporary measure. He stated that monitoring and regulation must be carried out consistently to ensure the Blok M area is permanently free of illegal parking.
He also urged the public not to give money to illegal parking attendants. Parking payments, he added, must be made officially at the exit using an electronic system or an official payment card.
According to him, the digital parking system in the Blok M area needs improvement, including the recording of vehicles entering through the parking machines. He reminded people not to force vehicles into the parking lot when the parking lot is full, as this can lead to overcrowding and congestion on surrounding roads.
"The parking system must be able to provide real-time parking capacity information for the convenience of drivers," he added.
He requested that the Transportation Agency conduct routine patrols, especially during peak hours. He considered the presence of official parking attendants crucial to help direct vehicles, so the public feels safer and no longer relies on illegal parking attendants.
Regarding guidance, Al Fatih stated that the City Council will encourage the Social Services Agency to extend its efforts beyond data collection. He believes job training and empowerment are needed to provide more viable livelihood options for illegal parking attendants.
It is thought that some illegal parking attendants can be directed to officially cooperate with the Transportation Agency in managing legal on-street parking pockets through good training, guidance and supervision.
The City Council wants Jakarta's public spaces to remain orderly, safe, comfortable, and free from extortion, while also providing development and empowerment solutions for the lower classes.
"So the arrangement is also solution-oriented and humane," he stated.
