Waste Management on the Muara Angke Coast Accelerated

Joint officers continue to accelerate the handling of the piles of garbage that stretch along the coast of Muara Angke, Penjaringan District, North Jakarta. Up to now, the volume of waste collected has reached approximately 20 cubic meters.

Head of North Jakarta Environmental Sub-agency, Edy Mulyanto said the cleaning involved personnel from North Jakarta and Seribu Island Environmental Sub-agencies, Water Body Waste Unit, and Water Police.

"Today at least 35 joint personnel were deployed to clean and transport rubbish in the coastal area," he said, Wednesday (6/3).

Waste Management and City Planning Set as Next Year's Priorities

Edy explained that the waste transportation process was carried out using garbage ships belonging to the Seribu Islands Environmental Sub-agency and the Water Police.

The piles of garbage did not come from the area around Muara Angke. The trash is carried by the currents of 12 rivers that flow into the sea. Furthermore, the westerly monsoon phenomenon also causes the trash to be carried by the current and accumulate in coastal areas.

"This waste originates not only from Jakarta, but also from surrounding areas like Tangerang and Bekasi. The pounding waves and wind push the waste material into this area, causing it to accumulate," he explained.

He added that on Thursday (6/4) tomorrow, community service will be carried out involving an additional 50 joint personnel to help with the cleaning process.

"Two excavators will be deployed to expedite the dredging process. We aim to complete the cleanup within the next week," he added.

Meanwhile, Head of the Waste, Hazardous and Toxic Materials Management Section (PSLB3) of the Seribu Islands Environmental Sub-agency, Lukman Dermanto, explained that the volume of waste collected in the last few days was quite significant.

"Over the past two days, we have collected 20 cubic meters of trash. We continue to strive to ensure the coastal area is clean and comfortable again," he explained.

His party has also coordinated with the local mangrove community to plant mangroves after the cleaning process is complete.
