Jakarta to Team Up with Building Owners for Designating Online Taxi Parking

To curb illegal parking, the Jakarta Transportation Agency continues to strengthen its multi-stakeholder engagement, bringing together online motorcycle taxi communities, digital operators, and commercial property managers.

This is a valuable lesson for everyone

Such a move is viewed as a strategic long-term fix, designed to ensure seamless traffic flow while simultaneously providing for the logistical needs of ride-hailing partners.

Jakarta Transportation Agency Head, Budi Awaluddin stated that the provision of designated parking zones for online motorcycle taxis will be one of the primary focuses for immediate follow-up.

He noted that curbing illegal parking requires more than just rules; it demands adequate facilities and cross-sector support.

Therefore, he will bring together online motorcycle taxi communities, app developers, and property managers to discuss how to execute a more orderly parking system.

This forum is set to deliberate on the regulatory framework issued by the Ministry of Transportation regarding designated parking for online taxi drivers in office complexes and high-end retail hubs.

"This is a valuable lesson for everyone. In the future, we will synergize with online taxi communities, app providers, and property owners to reach a feasible solution for the city’s advancement. Our target is to meet with these stakeholders at the earliest opportunity as a sign of our steadfast commitment," he expressed, Monday (6/22).

Representing the online taxi drivers, Lintas Gajah Mada (LGM) Chairman, Irfan, lauded the proposal. He pointed out that the tendency for drivers to linger at building entrances stems from a shortage of convenient parking. Moreover, with the slim profit margins from food delivery orders, incurring extra parking charges is often perceived as an undue hardship.

"By way of illustration, delivery charges may hover between Rp 10,000 and Rp 16,000, yet the driver's net profit is only about Rp 5,000. Should they incur a Rp 2,000 parking fee, the surplus becomes negligible," he explained.

He maintained that drivers essentially back the administration’s drive for public order, as long as it remains compassionate and is coupled with the availability of proper infrastructure.

He hoped that the synergy between the Transportation Agency and property managers would accelerate the realization of specialized online taxi drivers parking facilities. This is expected to streamline pickup and delivery services, fostering a more organized environment without compromising traffic order.

"This is not that we are unwilling to park legally, but customers are often reluctant when asked to cover additional parking fees. Moreover, only a few buildings in Jakarta offer designated parking for onlinr taxi. Yet, under Transportation Ministry Regulation 12/2019, all buildings have a legal obligation to provide these spaces," he asserted.

Go-Graber Indonesia Community General Chairman, Bang Maung also voiced his support for the Jakarta government’s initiatives. He emphasized, they are prepared to uphold prevailing regulations and prioritize deliberation in resolving various on-the-ground challenges.

He is confident that they will continue to uphold the dignity of their struggle, possessing decorum, ethics, and civility in their perspectives.

"From now on, we will emphasize mutual agreement through deliberation. We're constantly educating our drivers to respect existing legislation. Any negative framing on social media should be seen as the vicissitudes of life. With God’s will, we will not see a recurrence of these events," he concluded.
