Rawa Bening Market Ramps Up Waste Sorting Program

The waste sorting program is being intensified at Rawa Bening Market, East Jakarta, in an effort to reduce the volume of waste sent to the Bantar Gebang Integrated Waste Treatment Site (TPST) in Bekasi, West Java.

32 kilograms of inorganic waste are collected in a single weighing

Rawa Bening Market Head, Achmad Subhan said the waste sorting program, in effect since March 2026, ensures that inorganic waste is separated at the source by cleaners prior to collection.

He explained that six cleaners are deployed daily to collect the sorted inorganic waste. Every three to four days, the waste is weighed and sold to waste collectors who pick it up directly from the market.

"On average, about 32 kilograms of inorganic waste are collected in a single weighing. The types vary, ranging from cardboard and cans to plastic bottles, cups, and paper," he expressed, Wednesday (6/24).

Subhan noted that the market's specific trading profile plays a key role in the initiative's success. With most of the 600 active traders dealing in gemstones, agates, and jewelry, the waste generated is largely dry materials, which are far more manageable for segregation and recycling

"Besides sorting waste, the market's management and traders conduct weekly communal work every Friday. This aims to keep the premises clean and provide a pleasant experience for sellers and shoppers," he explained.

This sorting waste received support from one of the traders at the Rawa Bening market, Edy (48).

"We proactively prepare separate trash bags to streamline the process for cleaners. As a result, the waste is fully segregated at the source," he asserted.
