Health Agency Highlights Importance of ISPA Prevention Amidst Weather Shifts

Unstable weather and high pollution levels make people more prone to Acute Respiratory Infections (ISPA), especially if their immunity is declining.

Current weather fluctuations and high air pollution exposure increase ISPA risks

Jakarta Health Agency Head, Ani Ruspitawati stated that ISPA is a disease caused by viral or bacterial infections that attack the respiratory tract.

Therefore, the public must increase their vigilance against this disease, as it can affect anyone regardless of age or daily activities.

Implementing Clean and Healthy Lifestyle Preventing ISPA

"Current weather fluctuations and high air pollution exposure increase ISPA risks, making it vital to keep the body healthy and strong," he expressed, Thursday (6/25).

She explained, several factors can increase the risk of transmission and the onset of ISPA, such as dry air, temperature changes, transitional seasons, poor indoor ventilation, exposure to cigarette smoke, and weakened immunity. Enclosed work environments with poor air circulation are also a factor that workers should be wary of.

She explained that ISPA symptoms usually start with a cough, runny nose, sneezing, sore throat, and a stuffy nose. Patients might also have headaches, fever, and feel very tired.

"If it isn't treated correctly, ISPA can get in the way of daily life and might cause complications for people at risk," she added.

The Health Agency urges the public to visit health facilities immediately if they develop symptoms. Warning signs that require medical attention include rapid breathing or shortness of breath, chest indrawing while breathing, high fever, and symptoms that show no improvement for more than three days following self-treatment.

"Immediately seek medical attention at the nearest health facility if you experience these symptoms to ensure you receive proper treatment and prevent your condition from worsening,” she stressed.

To prevent ISPA, the public is urged to follow a healthy lifestyle: wear a mask when necessary, wash hands regularly with soap, avoid tobacco smoke, and drink at least eight glasses of water daily. Moreover, a balanced diet, sufficient rest, and regular physical activity are vital for maintaining body resistance.

Aside that, consuming a balanced diet, getting adequate rest, and exercising regularly are important steps in maintaining the immune system.

"Prevention is the best approach. By adopting healthy habits, the risk of contracting ISPA can be minimized, allowing people to remain healthy and productive in their daily routines," she emphasized.
