City Council Backs Special Parking for Online Taxi Drivers in Buildings

Jakarta City Council Commission B Member, Muhammad Al Fatih welcomes the Jakarta Transportation Agency's plan to collaborate with the online taxi community or called Ojol, app operators, and building managers to provide dedicated parking zones for ojol drivers.

We need to fast-track this move

According to him, fast-tracking this move is crucial to tackle the traffic snarls triggered by ojol drivers parking on main roads while waiting for orders.

"We need to fast-track this move. It is a concrete way to tackle traffic jam triggered by ojol drivers stopping or waiting for passengers indiscriminately on the streets,” he expressed, Thursday (6/25).

Nevertheless, the provision of parking spaces must go beyond commercial areas. The administration needs to facilitate dedicated waiting zones in high-density areas—ranging from transportation hubs and stations to hospitals and public service facilities.

"The buildup of online taxi vehicles at these spots has long been a major contributor to the city's jam,” he noted.

Al Fatih also urged building owners to provide proper parking bays as a commitment to maintaining traffic order in the capital. He emphasized, synergy between the government, building managers, and app operators is the master key to making this policy work effectively.

He then urged them to expand integrated shelters, especially in congestion-prone spots and Jakarta’s public facilities.

“With clearly designated shelters, the waiting process becomes more orderly and safe, ensuring that it doesn't clog up the traffic flow,” he added.

At the same time, he warned against these spots being exploited as permanent free parking. To keep the city moving, ironclad rules and rigorous monitoring are a must, backed by a firm commitment from all stakeholders.

He also called on online taxi drivers to maintain the cleanliness, order, and comfort of the designated shelters and parking facilities provided.

"Quality infrastructure needs disciplined habits to work. When these go hand-in-hand, everyone benefits, and we move closer to a more organized Jakarta, free from avoidable traffic snarls,” he emphasized.
