55.7 Tons of Trash in Gendong River Canal Cleaned

The cleanup of waste from the Kali Gendong Connecting Canal in the Muara Baru area, RT 16, 17, and RW 19, and 17, Penjaringan Urban Village, Penjaringan District, North Jakarta, has been completed. During the five-day operation, officers successfully removed 55.7 tons, or 251 cubic meters, of waste from the river.

Now the river is clean

Head of Penjaringan Urban Village, Makhrus Nugroho Darojat said the cleaning was carried out in stages from June 21 to 25, 2026. The handling focused on points that were experiencing blockages due to piles of rubbish, sediment, and grass blocking the water flow.

"Now the river is clean, the water flow is open again and flowing smoothly," he said, Friday (6/26).

Makhrus detailed that the volume of waste successfully transported on June 21 reached 16.4 tons or 74 cubic meters and on June 22 it was 9.5 tons or 42 cubic meters of waste.

"For June 23rd it was 11.3 tons or 51 cubic meters, June 24th it reached 10 tons or 45 cubic meters, and June 25th it was 8.6 tons or 39 cubic meters," he explained.

He added that river cleanliness doesn't solely depend on the work of officers but also requires the active participation of the community. Therefore, he continues to encourage residents not to throw trash into the river and to practice sorting waste at the source, as instructed by the Jakarta Governor.

"We have also distributed organic waste bins to each RT to support the waste sorting program," he added.

Meanwhile, Head of RT 19/17 of Penjaringan Urban Village, Tarso appreciated the cleaning or garbage raids carried out by joint officers.

"We are very grateful that the river is now clean. We have also provided trash receptacles made from used buckets for residents and have coordinated with sanitation workers to ensure regular trash collection," he said.

According to him, the assistance of sorting trash bins from Penjaringan Urban Village will be placed at a number of strategic points in residential areas to increase public awareness to maintain cleanliness and no longer throw trash into the river.
