Pejaten Barat Residents Learn Waste Management

The South Jakarta Environment (LH) Sub-agency conducted a waste management education and outreach program for residents of RW 04 in Pejaten Barat Urban Village, Pasar Minggu Sub-district, highlighting the implementation of Governor Instruction No. 5/2026 on Waste Sorting and Processing from the Source.

Everyone must play an active role

Pasar Minggu Environment Unit Head Nandang Jumyatin said the outreach program reflects the government's commitment to improving waste management, noting that the Bantar Gebang Integrated Waste Processing Site (TPST) will eventually accept only residual waste.

"We continue to actively educate residents through direct outreach in neighborhoods, schools, offices, and businesses. Everyone must play an active role," he said on Sunday (7/5).

Nandang said the program aims to raise public awareness of the importance of sorting waste from the source, beginning at the household level. Residents were taught to separate waste into four categories: organic, inorganic, hazardous and toxic (B3), and residual waste.

In addition, participants took part in a hands-on demonstration on how to build and use jumbo biopore holes, an effective method for processing organic waste.

Nandang said jumbo biopore holes can turn organic waste, such as food scraps and dry leaves, into compost while also helping improve the soil's ability to absorb rainwater.

"Through collaboration between the government and the community, we can reduce waste and create a cleaner, healthier, greener, and more sustainable environment," he said.

Meanwhile, Pejaten Barat Urban Village Head Yudi Setia Prawira said the education sessions, outreach activities, and hands-on demonstrations were met with strong enthusiasm from neighborhood leaders and other community representatives.

He added that the South Jakarta Environment Sub-agency introduced a range of eco-friendly waste management methods that benefit the community.

"In addition to the educational sessions and waste processing demonstrations, we also signed a joint commitment as a shared pledge to adopt responsible waste sorting and management practices," he noted.
