Bantargebang Landfill Begins Shutting Down Disposal Zones

Jakarta Environmental Agency is officially phasing out open dumping at the Bantargebang Landfill.

Two active zones are now being sealed with protective layers and will soon be upgraded with geomembranes as we transition to a ‘controlled landfill’ system.

This is a major move by the Jakarta government under Governor Pramono Anung to overhaul waste management and ensure a healthier environment for the local people.

Jakarta Environmental Agency Head, Dudi Gardesi announced that as of July 17, the Integrated Waste Management (UPST) team has begun covering the top of Zone 2.

"Covering the waste is a concrete step to reduce bad smells, help control gas emissions, and minimize leachate buildup caused by rainwater,” he said, Tuesday (7/21).

He explained that waste disposal now follows a strict 7-day cycle. Once a spot is filled, it is sealed for seven days while operations move to a fresh, prepared area.

This tag-team mechanism is key to keeping the landfill stable and controlling environmental impact during this transition. By being more disciplined with dumping spots, waste management becomes safer and way more measurable.

Dudi explained that these geomembranes are the ultimate upgrade for protecting the landfill, managing leachate (waste liquid), and keeping the environmental impact in check.

“We’re teaming up with the private sector through creative financing. This means faster improvements and better tech without relying solely on the state budget," he added.

He believes private sector backing is key to meeting technical requirements in the field.

This synergy highlights that solving Jakarta’s waste problem is a shared responsibility.

While revitalizing Bantargebang remains a priority, the city is also championing disciplined waste sorting and reduction right from the source.

He added that downstream initiatives—driven by technology and improved operational standards—must work in tandem with a shift in behavior across households, neighborhoods, and business sectors.

"By consistently applying controlled landfill protocols, we aim to phase out open dumping. We're optimistic about transforming Bantargebang into a facility that meets superior standards, protects the environment, and provides real value to the public," he concluded.
