Jakarta to Implement Controlled Landfill System at Bantargebang Starting August 1

Jakarta is stepping up its waste management game. Starting August 2026, the city will officially shift from traditional open dumping to a controlled landfill system at Bantargebang Landfill.

We're moving toward a controlled landfill system

This strategic move is designed to create a safer, greener environment for the surrounding community. To ensure a seamless transition without disrupting daily waste collection, the city is taking a measured approach while simultaneously boosting processing facilities.

It aims to treat more waste at the source and at the facility, minimizing the burden on landfill zones.

Waste Management at The Landfill Behind Cakung Market to Complete Tomorrow

Jakarta Environmental Agency Head, Dudi Gardesi confirms the city is on track for 100% waste management. In partnership with the Environment Minstry, Jakarta will officially phase out open dumping starting August 1.

“We're moving toward a controlled landfill system. This is a major step forward, and we are making sure it happens without compromising the quality of waste collection for the public," he explained.

Under the new system, Bantargebang will shift from chaotic dumping to engineered waste management. By compacting waste and applying periodic capping layers, the city aims to eliminate the classic problems of foul odors, spontaneous fires, and the danger of landslides.

The roadmap highlights a significant transformation: from a 72.56% reliance on open dumping in early 2026, Jakarta is pushing for a cleaner future. By the second half of 2026, the city targets slashing open dumping to 50.34% while boosting modern processing to over 20%.

“We'll continue to scale up processing capacity. By 2027, we target processing 45.65% of all waste. Ultimately, by 2028, we aim to completely phase out open dumping in favor of waste processing and a safer, more controlled landfill system,” he explained.

Infrastructure upgrades are already in full swing to support the shift. The city is reinforcing the site with geomembrane liners, advanced sanitation, and Leachate Treatment Plants, while ensuring slope stability to prevent landslides.

“Open dumping is officially being phased out, starting with targeted disposal zones,” he explained.

However, Dudi stressed that infrastructure is only half the battle. The success of Bantargebang relies on a source-to-site synergy. He called on every sector—from households to commercial hubs—to take responsibility by segregating and minimizing the waste they produce.

Through this collaboration, the city remains optimistic that the transformation of waste management will proceed consistently.

The aim extends beyond merely ending open dumping; it is about establishing a system that is safer, more accountable, eco-friendly, and sustainable.

"While the city continuously improves downstream facilities and systems, success ultimately depends on upstream participation. Simple steps—such as reducing single-use plastics, finishing meals to prevent food waste, sorting trash, and processing organic waste—will significantly alleviate the burden on Bantargebang," he concluded.
