Jakarta PPKUKM Mandates Waste Segregation to Promote Green Practices

The Jakarta Industry, Trade, Cooperatives, and Small and Medium Enterprises Agency (PPKUKM) is encouraging Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) to foster an eco-friendly business culture by implementing waste segregation and processing at the source.

This can begin with simple habits within their respective workplaces

Jakarta PPKUKM Agency Head, Elisabeth Ratu Rante Allo, has issued Departmental Instruction No. e-0004/2026 on the Movement for Waste Segregation and Processing at the Source.

This regulation is a follow-up to Gubernatorial Instruction No. 5/2026 regarding the same movement.

She stated that this move is part of the Jakarta government's commitment to creating a cleaner, healthier, and more sustainable environment.

"Environmental issues are now a shared responsibility. As the backbone of Jakarta’s economy, MSMEs play a strategic role in reducing waste generation to build a sustainable business ecosystem," she expressed, Thursday (7/30).

She emphasized that MSMEs play a pivotal role in preserving environmental quality. Through the at-source waste segregation initiative, entrepreneurs across Jakarta can foster a more environmentally responsible business culture.

"This can begin with simple habits within their respective workplaces. For instance, by reducing the use of single-use packaging, repurposing or recycling materials that still hold economic value, and integrating waste management into their daily business practices," she explained.

Further, Ratu expressed confidence that this initiative would not just result in a cleaner city, but also foster a circular economy.

"Valuable waste can be funneled back into the production cycle, which in turn eases the load on our landfills," she noted.

Aside that, she ensured that at-source waste management would be implemented across all PPKUKM Agency facilities. Waste reduction principles will be integrated into various department activities, such as bazaars, exhibitions, promotions, training sessions, and business mentoring.

She added that materials on waste management and the reduction of single-use plastics would also become a core part of MSME development programs.

"We want to instill the mindset that waste management is not merely an obligation, but an investment in the future. A healthy environment will create a more comfortable business space, improve the community's quality of life, and strengthen the competitiveness of Jakarta’s MSMEs," she emphasized.
