North Jakarta Promotes Reading Through School Literacy Roadshow

The North Jakarta Library and Archives Sub-agency (Sudinpusip) is holding a reading and literacy roadshow at SDN Sungai Bambu 03 on Jalan Gadang, Sungai Bambu Urban Village, Tanjung Priok, North Jakarta.

Help students expand their knowledge while fostering greater interest in reading

North Jakarta Library and Archives Sub-agency Head Irawan said the program aims to foster an interest in reading from an early age while providing students with a platform to gain knowledge beyond the formal school curriculum.

"We want to provide students with knowledge they may not receive through formal education. The goal is to hone the skills they have already learned at school while helping them develop new ones," he said on Tuesday (8/11).

Irawan explained that the roadshow program is being held from July to November 2026, reaching 48 locations and targeting students from elementary to senior high school across North Jakarta.

According to him, the roadshow covers different topics depending on the students' age. Elementary school students, for example, learn about environmental issues such as waste sorting through storytelling sessions.

Meanwhile, topics for junior and senior high school students focus more on creative writing, poetry, and various social issues.

"We have also included a special topic on violence against children as part of early prevention efforts through knowledge and awareness," he added.

Irawan encouraged students to keep learning through reading as they prepare for future challenges, particularly as Jakarta moves toward becoming a global city.

"Jakarta will become a global city. This is a challenge for children to stay competitive amid rapid advances in technology and information. The key is to keep developing an interest in reading and expanding their knowledge," he emphasized.

SDN Sungai Bambu 03 Head Putut Nuriyanto welcomed the program, saying the students were enthusiastic about taking part in the activities.

"The students were very enthusiastic about the activities, with representatives from each class taking part," he said.

Putut also welcomed the mobile library, saying it could help students expand their knowledge while fostering greater interest in reading.

"We hope this program can continue because it is very beneficial to the students' development and knowledge," he noted.

Meanwhile, 10-year-old Tristan, a fifth-grade student at SDN Sungai Bambu 03, said he enjoyed the program, particularly the storytelling session, which he found both entertaining and informative.

"It was really fun. Kak Elis also told us about history from around the world, so we learned a lot of new things," he said.
