Central Jakarta Explores Future Development of Pasar Baru

The Central Jakarta Administration held a focus group discussion (FGD) on the future development of the Pasar Baru area on Thursday (8/13).

The area can regain its appeal both culturally and economically

Initiated by the Central Jakarta Culture Sub-agency, the FGD was held under the theme "Pasar Baru: Jakarta's Hub" at the M Mashabi Arts and Culture Training Center in Tanah Abang.

Legendary Area of Pasar Baru will Be New Hub for Jakartans

Central Jakarta Assistant for Economic and Development Affairs Suprayogie said the FGD was held to gather ideas, critical perspectives, and input from speakers, academics, practitioners, and stakeholders.

"The discussion aims to formulate strategic steps for preserving and developing the Pasar Baru area in the future," he noted.

According to him, Pasar Baru is more than a historic shopping district. It is a cultural hub where diverse ethnic groups and traditions have shaped Jakarta's identity for centuries.

"As one of the cultural heritage sites and historic areas in Central Jakarta, Pasar Baru has great potential for further development without losing its historical roots and local wisdom," he highlighted.

He said ideas and input gathered through the FGD would later serve as important references for developing a strategic guidebook.

The guidebook is expected to support cultural preservation and Pasar Baru's revitalization, helping transform the area into a sustainable hub for history, culture, and the economy.

As Jakarta approaches its 500th anniversary, Suprayogie said the Jakarta Provincial Government hopes revitalization can soon begin in key areas such as Pasar Baru.

"The revitalization is expected to follow the success of other historic areas, such as Blok M in South Jakarta, which has transformed into an iconic modern destination," he said.

Central Jakarta Culture Sub-agency Head Andri Ferdian explained that the FGD was important for exploring the potential and perspectives for developing Pasar Baru in the future, so the area can regain its appeal both culturally and economically.

"The results of today's FGD will serve as input for us as we continue our discussions on revitalizing the Pasar Baru area, which have been ongoing for the past two years," he said.
