Karang Tengah Pipe Jacking Slated to Wrap Up by December 2026

This six-month project is a game-changer for locals

One of the key initiatives involves the construction of a drainage system using the pipe jacking method along Jalan Karang Tengah Raya, Lebak Bulus, Cilandak. This critical infrastructure project is slated for completion by this coming December.

South Jakarta Mayor Syafrin Liputo pointed out that the current water channels have reached their limit in handling heavy rainfall. As a smart alternative, the city is deploying trenchless pipe jacking technology, allowing for the construction of deep drainage systems without tearing up the entire road surface.

"This six-month project is a game-changer for locals. Through this jacking method, we hope to clear up flood-prone spots from Karang Tengah to the Adhyaksa area, directing the excess water efficiently toward its final outlet at the Pesanggrahan River," he explained, Wednesday (8/19).

Syafrin detailed the scale of the underground work, noting that depths range from seven meters at the upstream end to a staggering 9 to 12 meters downstream.

With the project occupying a portion of the road, residents and commuters are encouraged to follow all traffic diversions and signs. While some delays are expected, these measures are vital for the safety of both workers and road users.

"We kindly ask for everyone’s patience during this time. Once the project is finished, traffic will return to its usual rhythm, and the area will be better protected from floods," he added.

According to Santo, the city aims to wrap up this pipe jacking project by December 2026. The new system features a massive 1.2-meter diameter pipeline extending over 1,298 meters—a strategic move to eliminate flood-prone spots during heavy rains.

"We're laying nearly 1.3 kilometers of pipe, connecting the Pertanian and Adhyaksa channels. Right now, we’ve successfully started on the first of ten jacking pits. Once finished, this system will have a massive capacity to intercept and manage upstream flow," he added.

The new pipeline cuts right through chronic flood spots, stretching from the Pertanian junction and the DKI and Bona Indah complexes all the way to Adhyaksa.

While the upgrades are essential, Santo is asking for the public's patience as the city works through these unavoidable traffic delays.

"Safety is our priority. We ask everyone to stay alert, follow the traffic diversions, and cooperate with our team on the ground. Together, we are building a flood-free future for this area," he stated.
