Bapemperda Discusses Population Control to Support Jakarta as a Global City

The Regional Regulation Formation Body (Bapemperda) of the Jakarta City Council held a public hearing to discuss the Draft Regional Regulation on Population Control.

Chairman of Jakarta City Council's Bapemperda, Abdul Aziz said the public hearing involves various stakeholders, ranging from academics, non-governmental organizations (NGOs), and civil society and political organizations to relevant ministries.
Rano Outlines Key Points of Draft Regional Regulation on Population ControlVarious inputs from the Ministry of Home Affairs (Kemendagri), the National Population and Family Planning Board (BKKBN), academics, and other stakeholders will serve to enrich the drafting of the Regional Regulation (Raperda).
He emphasized that population control is not solely aimed at limiting the number of residents. Moreover, Aziz noted, Jakarta's population tends to be declining as some residents move out of the city.
"Population control efforts must also focus on improving the quality of the population, rather than merely controlling or limiting the number of people," he said, Tuesday (9/1).
He explained that high population density poses a challenge for Jakarta in improving the quality of public services. Therefore, inter-agency coordination is required to map population distribution so that density can be more evenly balanced.
"The gap must be narrowed to achieve a more even distribution of population density," he explained.
Meanwhile, Head of Jakarta Women's Empowerment, Child Protection, and Population Control (PPAPP) Agency, Dwi Oktavia stated the draft regional regulation aims to manage population quantity, quality, and mobility in a more targeted manner that aligns with Jakarta's spatial carrying capacity.
According to Dwi, such regulation is crucial for preparing Jakarta to become a global city. She hopes that population control policies will help better manage the size, quality, and mobility of Jakarta's population.
