Disaster Socialization and Training Needed to Be Improved

Chairman of Commission D of the Jakarta City Council, Yuke Yurike, encouraged the public to strengthen their preparedness to face various potential natural disasters such as earthquakes and eruptions.

We have to prepare

Yuke said the public needs to follow government advice and not ignore potential disasters. She believes mitigation measures must be prepared early to prevent panic when a disaster occurs.

"We have to prepare for all kinds of situations, mitigation and so on," she said, Tuesday (9/8).

She encouraged regular disaster awareness campaigns and training, particularly in schools and offices. Residents need to understand evacuation routes, what to do during an earthquake, and what to avoid.

"It is better for us to be prepared and perhaps disaster training is also absolutely necessary," she added.

Yuke also asked residents to prepare disaster bags containing basic necessities such as important documents, emergency lights, spare batteries, instant food, and other emergency supplies.

Amidst the drought, Yuke also reminded residents to conserve water. She stated that watering to anticipate the impacts of the eruption is still necessary, but it must be balanced with water conservation.

She asked the public to use water sparingly and maintain water reserves because a number of reservoirs and rivers were starting to dry up.

"The most important thing is that the public must realize that we must be prepared for this for the next few months. So, we really must conserve water," she emphasized.
