Jakarta Students to Receive Free Public Transport Service Cards

The Jakarta Legislative Council Commission B proposes including students as recipients of the Free Service Card (KLG) for Public Transportation. This policy aims to expand free transportation access for students and serve as an alternative for those who are not yet reached by school bus services.

Jakarta Legislative Council Commission B Chairman, Nova Harvian Paloh stated that students need access to free public transportation to make commuting to and from school easier.

Currently, she added, students are not included in the 15 groups eligible for free transportation services through the KLG program. This is despite the fact that many schools are located near Transjakarta stops and routes.

"Why not? It means students would be given the free service card. I think this would be a great step forward to maximize the existing transportation system in Jakarta," she expressed, Wednesday (9/9).

He believes that free access to Transjakarta for students can serve as an alternative solution to the limited capacity of school buses. Since not all students are accommodated by school buses, a broader range of transportation options is needed.

Thereby, he proposes that students in general be considered for inclusion in the KLG recipient scheme, thus the free service is not limited only to holders of the Jakarta Smart Card (KJP).

"This means encouraging students to get used to using public transportation. That is what we are promoting—how students can also utilize our public transport, which already has well-established routes,” he explained.

Nova gave an example of SMPN 115 Tebet, which has a Transjakarta bus stop nearby. This makes it easier for students and parents to access public transportation.

"For instance, if a parent has a KLG card, they can also send their child for free. That’s something we need to consider moving forward. Can parents always drive their kids to school buses? Not really. This is one of our recommendations, and it might be reviewed by the Transportation Agency and Transjakarta,” he said.
