MRT Jakarta will Develop a Placemaking Concept in Kota Tua

PT MRT Jakarta plans to develop the Kota Tua area, West Jakarta, as a third space and transit oriented development (TOD) with a placemaking concept.

Head of the Business Planning and Expansion Division of MRT Jakarta, Samuel Ryan Pradipta Pranowo, in his presentation stated that the concept of placemaking is the design and management of a quality third space that involves the community and optimizes local businesses.

"We will revitalize Kota Tua. Hopefully, it will remain vibrant by maintaining its heritage identity. So, Chinatown and Little Amsterdam won't disappear. The area will be enlivened with a combination of retail, community, and more," he said.

Moreover, Kota Tua will also be made more comfortable and safe for pedestrians, both in surface and underground areas (stations), as well as limiting the movement of private vehicles.

"There will probably be a tram going back and forth within the Kota Tua area in the future," he added.

The development of areas with a placemaking concept, continued Samuel, is one of the points included in the Jakarta Provincial Government's program and implementation roadmap towards becoming one of the world's top 20 global cities by 2045.

This is recorded in the book Jakarta Rise #20: Steps Towards a Top Global City issued by the Jakarta Regional Development Planning Agency (Bappeda).

"Revitalization work on the area will begin after the Bundaran HI-Kota MRT project is completed. The south-to-north line is targeted to reach Kota Tua in 2029," he stated.
