Ahead of 500th Anniversary, Jakarta Tackles Overhead Cables Through 5M

The Jakarta Provincial Government is preparing the 5M Movement to organize utility networks across Jakarta ahead of the city's 500th anniversary. The program is being carried out because utility networks, particularly overhead cables, remain tangled along several roads.

"As Jakarta approaches its 500th anniversary, we have a program called 5M. This is a movement to organize utility networks across Jakarta, as we know that many of the utility networks currently remain tangled," said Jakarta Public Works Agency Head Heru Suwondo on Thursday (9/10).

He explained that the first part of the 5M Movement involves using Integrated Utility Network Infrastructure (SJUT). 

So far, the Jakarta Provincial Government has built 54.2 kilometers of SJUT across 28 roads, including 37.1 kilometers across 17 roads in South Jakarta, 13.9 kilometers across nine roads in East Jakarta, and 3.2 kilometers across two roads in Central Jakarta. West Jakarta and North Jakarta do not yet have SJUT.

"Of the 54.2 kilometers that have been built, 33.08 kilometers of cables have already been relocated underground, while the relocation of another 8.6 kilometers is currently in progress. We also have plans to build another 12.5 kilometers of SJUT," he noted.

The second part involves independently relocating cables where SJUT is not yet available. 

As of 2026, independent relocation has been carried out along 38 roads, covering a total of 46.5 kilometers. The work covers 23.6 kilometers in South Jakarta, 12.9 kilometers in Central Jakarta, 4.5 kilometers in East Jakarta, 2.7 kilometers in West Jakarta, and 2.6 kilometers in North Jakarta.

The third part involves tying and organizing active overhead cables to keep them neat. The fourth involves cutting overhead cables that are no longer in use, while the fifth involves raising sagging cables to ensure the safety of road users.

"If overhead cables are still active, we tie and organize them. If they are no longer in use, we ask operators to check their networks so the cables can be disconnected and removed. We then raise sagging overhead cables. We must not allow another accident to happen because of overhead cables," he emphasized.

Heru said work to organize overhead cables through the 5M Movement has begun in cooperation with utility associations and operators. The work is planned to cover 59.55 kilometers across all five areas of Jakarta in 2026.

East Jakarta has the longest planned coverage at 21.6 kilometers, followed by West Jakarta at 16.7 kilometers, North Jakarta at 8.4 kilometers, Central Jakarta at 5.6 kilometers, and South Jakarta at 4.2 kilometers.

"The work involves removing unused cables, tying and organizing active cables, and raising sagging cables to create a more orderly and safer utility network," he pointed out.
