Pramono Endorses Five-City Tour for Jazz Goes to Campus

Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung floated a partnership with Jazz Goes to Campus (JGTC) to mark both its 50th anniversary and Jakarta’s 500th year.

Under the proposed plan, JGTC events would span all five of Jakarta's administrative cities.

Speaking at a press conference for the 49th JGTC at City Hall on Friday (9/11), Pramono proposed expanding the festival's footprint next year.

"Next year is JGTC’s 50th run and Jakarta’s 500th anniversary. I asked Mas Candra if they could perform in all five administrative cities," he noted in an official statement.

He praised JGTC’s nearly 50-year run as a testament to Jakarta’s dynamic youth culture and music scene. Led by University of Indonesia economics students, the festival continues to connect audiences across all age groups.

"JGTC is deeply woven into the fabric of this city and the nation. It set a benchmark that campuses nationwide have tried to follow," he added.

He emphasized that JGTC highlights Jakarta's rich cultural sector, applauding its role in keeping Indonesia’s music landscape vibrant.

"We commend the 49th edition of JGTC as one of our oldest jazz festivals, consistently revitalizing the national music scene," he noted.

He also endorsed plans to bring JGTC back to its historical roots in Salemba.

Theme-titled “Resonating Jazz Through Every Soul,” the 49th festival doubles as a platform to elevate jazz appreciation, mentor emerging talent, and bridge local artists with industry pros.

JGTC founder Candra Darusman noted the event's founding mission: demystifying jazz by bringing elite music to student spaces. He emphasized that the genre's improvisational nature mirrors youth expression.

He also shared roadmap details for a new "City Series," themed Reviving Jakarta as the Capital of Jazz, to expand the festival across the province.
