The Jakarta Regional Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBD) confirmed that a recent earthquake off the coast of the Seribu Islands caused no significant structural damage and poses no tsunami risk.
The magnitude 5.9 tremor produced no tsunami
However, officials urged residents to remain vigilant and stay informed through official government channel
Jakarta BPBD Head, Maruli Sijabat reported the quake hit at 4:23 AM Saturday, centered 69 kilometers northeast of the Seribu Islands (5.81°S, 106.56°E).
No Room for Greed! Stop Mask Hoarding amid Krakatoa Ashfall Surge"The magnitude 5.9 tremor produced no tsunami and left no structural impact due to its deep epicenter at 376 kilometers," he expressed, Saturday (9/12).
He pinpointed the epicenter just north of Payung Besar Island, South Seribu Islands.
Based on its location and depth, he categorized the event as a deep intraslab quake driven by oblique-normal fault movement.
As of 5 AM, monitoring by the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) showed no signs of aftershock activity.
BMKG continues to closely monitor potential aftershocks and will provide real-time updates to relevant stakeholders and the public.
Despite BPBD field checks confirming zero structural damage, Maruli still advised residents to stay cautious and alert.
Key indoor earthquake response steps from BPBD:
• Shield head and torso against falling hazards.
• Duck and cover under a strong desk or table.
• Remain indoors and calm until the shaking stops entirely.
If caught outdoors:
• Clear out from structural hazards—stay away from buildings, utility poles, trees, and collapse risks.
• Watch the ground and avoid areas showing visible surface cracks.
If driving:
• Slow down immediately and pull over in a clear, safe area.
• Exit the vehicle and move away if there is any threat of ground failure or fire.
If on the beach:
• Evacuate to higher ground immediately if shaking is strong or prolonged to mitigate tsunami risks.
If in mountainous areas:
• Steer clear of slopes prone to landslides.
• Once shaking stops, BPBD advises the public to:
• Evacuate orderly using stairs, never elevators.
• Check for injuries and administer first aid if needed.
• Inspect for secondary hazards like fires, gas leaks, and electrical short circuits.
• Stay out of damaged structures vulnerable to collapse.
• Stay alert for aftershocks and track official updates from BMKG, PVMBG, and BPBD.
• Call Jakarta Siaga 112 for immediate emergency assistance.
Maruli noted that recent megathrust and active fault discussions should prompt readiness, not panic.
He stressed that earthquake timing remains unpredictable.
To address this, the Jakarta government and BMKG are bolstering local mitigation efforts while urging households to take basic precautions.
"Know your safe zones, evacuation routes, and emergency steps for your family," he stated.
