Seamless, Not Steep: City Urged to Keep New LRT Line Affordable and Connected

Jakarta Legislative Council Commission B Member, Wa Ode Herlina is pushing for budget-friendly fares and full transit integration on the new Kelapa Gading–Manggarai LRT to drive a shift from private vehicles to public transit.

Completing the LRT line is only half the battle

According to Wa Ode, launching the 12.2-kilometer, 11-station LRT line—which cuts travel time to just 28 minutes—demands direct connectivity with Transjakarta, Mikrotrans, KRL trains, and beyond.

“Completing the LRT line is only half the battle. The key is linking it smoothly with Transjakarta, Mikrotrans, and KRL so people can switch modes without any hassle," she expressed, Monday (9/21).

She urged expanding Mikrotrans feeder services to LRT stops and building Park and Ride hubs around Manggarai. She highlighted, these steps would motivate commuters to trade private rides for public transit.

“Offering affordable or flat, integrated fares across transit options serves as a great incentive for people to leave their personal vehicles behind,” she explained.

She asserted hat integrated pricing should reflect what the public can afford while accounting for Public Service Obligation (PSO) needs, maintaining low fares without jeopardizing operational viability.

She further proposed tapping into Danantara’s financing capabilities to speed up transport projects while easing pressure on local government funds.

“Integration is what matters most. LRT, Transjakarta, Mikrotrans, and KRL must function seamlessly as one network, not isolated services," she added.

The route launch follows its official inauguration by President Prabowo Subianto on Wednesday (9/16). Built by PT Jakpro at a cost by Rp 12.1 trillion—funded through Jakarta's municipal budget—the line is now active.

The city administration introduced a promotional Rp 8 fare for its first eight days of operation, transitioning to a temporary flat rate by Rp 5,000 before official fares are set in October.
