Thousand Islands Steps Up Efforts to Improve Clean Water Supply

The Thousand Islands Regency and the Jakarta City Council (DPRD) discussed efforts to ensure adequate clean water supplies for residents.

Thousand Islands Regent Muhammad Fadjar Churniawan said addressing clean water issues across the islands requires cross-sector collaboration.

He noted that the focus should not only be on meeting residents' current needs but also on ensuring long-term water availability.

"Through this meeting, we hope to identify supply constraints and find solutions that can quickly address residents' needs," he said at the Pulau Kelapa Urban Village Office on Monday (9/21).

Fadjar explained that one issue requiring attention is the disparity in water prices, as seen on Panggang Island. Residents can pay up to Rp5,000 per gallon, while the official water price is around Rp500 per gallon.

"The difference is partly due to the transportation costs involved in collecting and distributing the water," he added.

Fadjar called for a subsidy scheme or transportation cost compensation from PAM Jaya to reduce the burden on residents.

His administration is also exploring collaboration with the private sector and BUMDs, including PHE OSES and Patra Jasa, to strengthen clean water supplies.

"We are ready to provide transportation vehicles if needed to support clean water distribution to areas in need," he said.

Jakarta DPRD Vice Chair Wibi Andrino said the working visit was aimed at finding joint solutions to clean water issues that have become increasingly apparent among residents amid the prolonged dry season.

"We want to make sure everyone works together, from the regency, sub-districts, and urban villages to the relevant agencies, so that residents' basic needs are met," he emphasized.

Januar Indropuspo, a representative of PAM Jaya in the Thousand Islands, said the company had committed to providing emergency clean water assistance of 6,000 liters per day to Kelapa Island and Panggang Island.

In addition to emergency measures, the meeting also discussed strengthening water treatment infrastructure. A proposal to double the capacity of the SWRO will be included in the report.

"The work is still underway. The SWRO SPAL-D facilities on Kelapa Island and Panggang Island are targeted for completion in October 2026. Meanwhile, the Kelapa Island BWRO, with a capacity of 2,500 liters per hour, is targeted for completion in early December 2026," he explained.

Meanwhile, Pulau Kelapa Urban Village Head Muhammad Adriansyah said the village administration had proposed raising the capacity of the Kelapa Island SWRO from 2,500 to 4,000 liters per hour in response to growing demand.

"We hope increasing the capacity will expand service coverage and help meet the water needs of residents on Kelapa Island and Harapan Island over the long term," he added.
