Wibi Calls for Limited Trial of Twice-Weekly CFD

Jakarta City Council (DPRD) Vice Chair Wibi Andrino supports all efforts to reduce emissions and improve air quality in Jakarta, including a proposal to hold Car-Free Day (CFD) twice a week.

"Basically, I support every effort to reduce emissions and make Jakarta healthier," Wibi said on Thursday (9/24).

However, Wibi called for the twice-weekly CFD to be implemented carefully, particularly on Saturdays. He highlighted that residents' activities, workers, MSMEs, commercial activities, and logistics remained relatively high on that day.

"We should not reduce pollution only to shift traffic congestion to other roads and place a greater burden on the public," he warned.

Wibi proposed that the plan first be tested on a limited and measurable basis over a certain period. The evaluation should cover its impact on emissions, traffic congestion, MSME activities, workers, and logistics access.

"We should not only count how many kilometers of roads are closed," he asserted.

He added that efforts to reduce emissions should be accompanied by stronger public transportation, better first- and last-mile connectivity, and vehicle emission controls.

"So, I support the idea behind the proposal, but its implementation must put residents first. Jakarta should become healthier without making life more difficult for the public," he said.

Previously, Jakarta Vice Governor Rano Karno also said the proposal to hold Car Free Day twice a week needed to be reviewed and tested for three months. He said holding it on Saturdays could potentially affect office and people's activities.
