Jakarta Govt to Expand Waste Screening System to 11 Rivers

Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung inspected the waste management system at the TB Simatupang Waste Screening System (SSTBS) facility in South Jakarta on Monday (10/5).

Waste is properly handled upstream

The visit was conducted to ensure that waste is properly handled upstream before it reaches the Manggarai Sluice Gate, while also reducing the overall waste load.

"Specifically, I wanted to see how waste is handled upstream, before it reaches Manggarai," Pramono said.

Nearly 30 percent of the waste flowing through the Ciliwung River is processed at the SSTBS facility. The collected waste is processed into organic fertilizer, feed for maggots, and residual waste that is compressed for use by several nearby industries.

"That way, waste management is no longer handled in a piecemeal manner, but more holistically and in a planned way," he added.

Some of the waste processed at the SSTBS facility is also sent to the Organic Processing Centers in Ciangir and Cilincing as compost. Pramono fully supports efforts to make waste management in Jakarta more systematic and better planned.

The Jakarta Provincial Government will also expand this type of waste management system to 11 other rivers, including the Sunter, Cipinang, Jatikramat, Baru Timur, Baru Barat, Angke, Grogol, Krukut, Buaran, Kalimalang, and Cakung rivers.

"We will develop this system in 11 rivers across Jakarta. Jakarta currently has 13 rivers, and one of them is this one, the Ciliwung River," he said.

Pramono is confident that Jakarta's waste can be properly managed through various waste management systems already in place, including the SSTBS facility, 3R waste processing facilities, the Rorotan RDF facility, and the Bantargebang RDF facility.

Pramono also said Jakarta's waste management system has shifted from the previous collect-and-dispose model to a sort-collect-and-process model, in line with Gubernatorial Instruction No. 5/2026 on Waste Sorting.
