Jakarta Govt Positions Cooperatives as a Key Pillar in Becoming a Global City

The Jakarta Provincial Government, through the Industry, Trade, Cooperatives, Small and Medium Enterprises (PPKUKM) Agency, is holding the 2026 Cooperative Open Innovation Network (COIN) at Blok M Hub in Melawai, Kebayoran Baru, South Jakarta, from October 27 to 29, 2026.

Cooperatives can contribute by creating jobs

The event is being held to implement Presidential Instruction No. 2/2022 and promote the flagship products of Jakarta's cooperatives through the National Movement to Be Proud of Indonesian Products (Gernas BBI).

PPKUKM and KKMP Discuss Strengthening the Role of Cooperatives

COIN 2026 carries the theme "CONNECT. COLLABORATE. GROW", encouraging cooperatives to build networks, strengthen collaboration, and grow into modern, adaptable, and competitive economic players.

Through exhibitions and business-matching sessions, the Jakarta PPKUKM Agency aims to connect cooperatives with market needs and create opportunities for sustainable partnerships.

Jakarta PPKUKM Agency Head Elisabeth Ratu Rante Allo said the spirit of the Youth Pledge serves as a reminder that progress stems from unity and collective effort.

According to her, this spirit was particularly relevant as Jakarta approaches its 500th anniversary, with cooperatives expected to play a role in the city's efforts to become an inclusive, resilient, and competitive global city.

"Cooperatives can contribute by creating jobs, strengthening the community's economy, developing local products, and participating in the city's supply chains," she said on Tuesday (10/27).

She noted that signing a cooperative's deed of establishment is an important first step in building its institutional foundation. However, this must be followed by actual business operations that are professional and sustainable, enabling cooperatives to deliver economic benefits to their members and contribute to Jakarta's economy.

She added that strong, sustained policy direction was needed to help cooperatives become more modern.

"We hope Jakarta will introduce a gubernatorial regulation on cooperatives to provide a more comprehensive framework for their development and empowerment. This would help ensure that cooperative development is more focused, adaptable, and responsive to changing needs," she said.

She also said efforts to raise public awareness of cooperatives should be expanded, particularly among young people and Generation Z. Cooperatives, she explained, need to offer a relevant option for young people to innovate, pursue entrepreneurship, develop their creativity, and build businesses together.

"We also need to encourage the development of multi-stakeholder cooperatives, which offer broader opportunities for participation by producers, workers, consumers, business operators, and other stakeholders, depending on their needs," she added.

She said strengthening cooperatives was not solely the responsibility of the PPKUKM Agency, but a shared undertaking requiring support from regional government agencies, BUMN/BUMD, cooperative centers, the Jakarta Regional Board of the Indonesian Cooperative Council (Dekopinwil), the Indonesian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (Kadin), businesses, educational institutions, financing institutions, and the public.

"We hope all parties will contribute to cooperative development, capacity building, market access, partnerships, and the strengthening of an integrated cooperative ecosystem," she highlighted.

According to her, cooperatives should also play a role in various development programs and regional assessments. Cooperative-related indicators are among the criteria used in several assessments, including the Healthy City/Regency assessment, the Outstanding Urban Village Head Competition, the TP PKK Competition, and the Regional Evaluation Financial Index (IKAD).

Cross-sector support is therefore essential to ensure cooperatives grow and contribute meaningfully to regional development, rather than merely meeting administrative requirements.

She expressed hope that COIN 2026 would serve as the starting point for practical collaboration, encouraging cooperatives to improve product quality, governance, professionalism, and their ability to meet market needs.

"Partners are expected to create opportunities for cooperation and provide appropriate support. COIN's success should not be measured solely by whether the event takes place, but by the partnerships established and the lasting benefits that follow," she said.
