Construction of the Pluit Zone 1 Wastewater Treatment Plant (IPAL) in Penjaringan, North Jakarta, is now 76 percent complete.
The facility will provide significant benefits for environmental management in Jakarta
The facility is designed to strengthen Jakarta's wastewater management system and support the availability of clean water for residents.
PT JIEP, PALJAYA Seal Partnership to Enhance Wastewater InfrastructureNorth Jakarta Vice Mayor Fredy Setiawan said his administration would support efforts to accelerate the project without compromising occupational safety and health of workers.
"The facility will provide significant benefits for environmental management in Jakarta, particularly in densely populated urban areas," he said on Thursday (11/5).
Fredy noted that the Pluit Zone 1 Wastewater Treatment Plant complex would include an Observation Deck where visitors could learn about urban wastewater treatment technology and management.
"We fully support the project and hope construction will be completed on schedule so residents can benefit from it as soon as possible. The Observation Deck will also serve as an educational facility for students and the public," he added.
Meanwhile, Coordinating Minister for Infrastructure and Regional Development Agus Harimurti Yudhoyono (AHY) explained that the Pluit Zone 1 Wastewater Treatment Plant was part of a National Strategic Project (PSN) being carried out through cooperation between the Indonesian and Japanese governments.
The facility represents an important step toward strengthening wastewater management in densely populated urban areas. In addition to improving environmental quality, it is also expected to support the availability of clean water for residents.
"This is essential infrastructure that people need, particularly when it comes to clean water. Wastewater management must use modern systems to deliver direct benefits to the public," he highlighted.
AHY said the Pluit Zone 1 Wastewater Treatment Plant project had a total budget of approximately Rp7.7 trillion. Once operational, the facility is expected to serve around one million people, or 220,000 households, across North, Central, and West Jakarta.
"A network of pipelines will carry wastewater to the plant for treatment. The treated water will then flow into Pluit Reservoir at a rate of approximately 3,000 liters per second," he explained.
AHY added that proper, modern wastewater management could help reduce environmental pollution while also limiting excessive reliance on groundwater extraction.
Uncontrolled groundwater extraction, he noted, could lead to land subsidence, which has long been one of the major challenges facing large cities, including Jakarta.
"If wastewater is not properly managed, the consequences will affect not only the environment but also public health. This is why facilities like this are essential for major cities such as Jakarta," he said.
