Ramadan, Need for Staple Food to Increase 20 Percent

Jakarta Provincial Government predicts that the need for staple food during Ramadan 1435 Hijri would increase to 20 percent. Therefore, city government has cooperated with suppliers from various regions regarding food supply, thus its stocks ensured safe ahead and during Ramadan.

The menus served for people breaking the fast are usually a lot more than regular, because each person in the family has different wish

Head of Jakarta Food Security Bureau of Economic Sub-Section, Marlina Widya Dewi, explained that the 20 percent increase happens because during fasting month of Ramadan, the food is served in bulk at pre-dawn meals before fasting and in breaking the fast. Among the commodities which demand increasing are beef, chicken, fish, drinks, and fruits.

The menus served for people breaking the fast are usually a lot more than regular, because each person in the family has different wish,” she uttered, Saturday (6/7).

Ahead of Ramadan, Staple Food Stocks in Jakarta Safe

Dewi informed that the need for staple food every day is already quite a lot, such as rice around 2,500 tons per day, sugar 500 tons per day, chicken 560 tons per day, beef 120 tons per day, cooking oil 80 tons per day, and chicken egg 1,115 tons per day.

“From that amount, need for food would increase for 20 percent. But don’t worry, because food stock in Jakarta is safe,” she asserted.

According to Dewi, Jakarta Provincial Government has cooperated with the suppliers in other regions to provide staple food. Among the cooperation was done some time ago with Palembang and East Nusa Tenggara (NTT).

“The cooperation done yesterday was automatically very influential, because there is guarantee of ability to supply food to Jakarta. So, don’t worry,” she expressed.

With the guarantee of food stock availability, Dewi added, it could stabilize staple food price in the market. This is because abundant food stock is in line with increasing demand for food as much as 20 percent.

“Food stock abundant makes food price relatively stable. The cooperation done is our concrete effort to maintain food stability in the city,” she told.
