City Agreed to Continue Cooperation on Leprosy Handling with Nippon Foundation

Jakarta Governor, Anies Baswedan, welcomes the visit of Yohei Sasakwa, Chairperson of The Nippon Foundation and Ambassador of World Health Organization (WHO) for leprosy at City Hall, Wednesday (11/15). In the meeting, both agreed to continue the cooperation of handling leprosy in Jakarta.

Anies explained, cooperation with the Nippon Foundation is about promoting, campaigning for the handling of leprosy and anti-discrimination against people with leprosy. Thus far the city has provided free healthcare services against leprosy.

"The point is we want Jakarta to be able to handle all the problems related to leprosy and the resolution of the agreed PBB Human Rights Consul," he expressed.

The Nippon Foundation Chairperson, Yohei Sasakawa asserted his arrival is to eradicate leprosy.

"Leprosy can be cured. If it is treated it can be cured totally," he asserted.

 

As for Jakarta Health Dept. Head, Koesmedi explained, the number of leprosy patients in Jakarta this year is reaching 311 patients with 203 new patients. The highest number of cases occurred in North Jakarta is 64 patients.

"The treatment can be done in all our puskesmas. Early detection can be done by friends via Ketuk pintu Layani Dengan Hati program," he closed.
