Basuki: Female Students Are Not Obligated to Wear Kebaya Encim

Vice Jakarta Governor Basuki T Purnama is straightening the news about Jakarta Education Department circulation letter on the use of kebaya encim (Betawi’s traditional clothes) every Friday for female students in the capital city. He said that female students are not obligated to use the clothes.

It is not an obligation to female students to wear kebaya encim to school on Friday

“It is not an obligation to female students to wear kebaya encim to school on Friday,” he stated, Thursday (8/7).

According to Basuki, the circulation letter signed by Head of Jakarta Education Department, Lasro Marbun, mentioned that on Friday the female students are wearing kebaya encim/Muslim attire.

“But, many people think different. So, I told Mr. Lasro Marbun that next time he makes circulation letter, don’t use slash sign (/) because it would be a bother later. Many people were striking when knew about the circulation letter,” he uttered.

Thus, Basuki has asked Lasro Marbun to no longer make letter using slash sign.

“I told him the letter was supposed to be saying that on Friday students can wear Muslim attire, batik, kebaya encim, or original clothes from your region like woven fabric or something. Besides, there is no regulation on what to wear on Friday,” asserted Basuki.
