Street Vendors in Monas Steal Electricity

The street vendors seem to never wary of hawking in Monas, Central Jakarta. What is worse is that not only trading in prohibited location, they are also stealing electricity for their own benefits.

Based on beritajakarta.com observations in Monas, some people are operating carousel for children’s play. Unfortunately, they operate it by using electricity illegally.

One of those irresponsible people is Sugiarto (45), a carousel operator who admitted intentionally steal electricity to operate the machine. By doing that and charging per person Rp 5,000 to ride on the carousel, he managed to reap benefit up to millions of rupiah.

“If we didn’t steal electricity, how could this machine works? If it didn’t work, we won’t get money. Alhamdulillah, since morning I’ve reaped benefit for as much as Rp 2 million. It is mostly children who are enthusiasts with this ride,” he said, Sunday (8/17).

Responding this matter, Head of Monas Technical Implementation Unit (UPT), Rini Hariyani, uttered that her party is currently focusing on recording the assets in Monas area. But, she promised to immediately take action against the street vendors who are stealing electricity.

“We’re currently recording the assets in Monas. We don’t know yet about electricity stealing, but we’ll make sure that the monitoring in the future will be stricter,” she stated.
