Bad Smell, Citizens Demand Septic Tank Factory in Pulogebang Closed Down

Residents living at RT 09/07 Pulogebang, Cakung, East Jakarta, sent a complaint letter to Jakarta Vice Governor, Basuki 'Ahok' T Purnama to immediately close down a factory of septic tank management near their residential. The factory is always spreading rotten smell and contaminating springs in residential.

Tomo, (50), one of citizens requested the city administration to immediately close down the factory, because always spread rotten smell and is prone to disease. "The smell is very pungent and disturbing us," he lamented, Wednesday (9/17).

Walim, (53), a Supervision Coordinator of Pulogebang Septic Tank Waste Management Installation, admitted his side receives many complaints from locals, and has tried to direct the factory not to spread smell anymore.

Head of Cakung Sub-District, Ali Murthadho revealed the doctor will be invited to find out the impact on citizens' health in a certain radius. "We also ask the East Jakarta Environmental Management Agency (BPLHD) to do research on the groundwater in a certain radius," he expressed.

Meanwhile, Head of Toxic Waste (B3) Management Section, Jakarta Cleanliness Department, Joko Dawoud added that another evaluation of waste management is planned to be done and keeps trying to reduce smell. "We'll check whether there is waste pollution or not in RT 09/07 Pulogebang," he expressed.

He added, such factory would be managed by the city-owned waste management firm PD PAL Jaya. In accordance with Jakarta Bylaw No. 3/2013 on waste management, installation of waste management must be managed by PD PAL. Currently, it is still in handover process from Jakarta Cleanliness Department to PD PAL.
