Illegal Levies Practice Very Rampant in South Jakarta's TPSs

The illegal levies practice in sector of trash management in South Jakarta is apparently very rampant. For each cart that disposes trash into the garbage dump (TPS), must pay tariff as much as Rp 300,000-500,000 per month.

Sulailam, (25), one of garbage men in Pengadegan Urban Village, Pancoran, admitted he should pay Rp 300,000 per month to the officers of South Jakarta Cleanliness Sub-Department. He assessed. there are 500 carts disposing trash to Pengadegan TPS.

"About 500 garbage men here (Pengadegan) must pay Rp 300,000 per month," he told, Tuesday (9/23).

Civil Servants will Be Mutated Due to Illegal Levies Case

He disclosed, similar case is also smelled in other areas in South Jakarta. Officers are often collecting money from garbage men amounting to Rp 300,000-Rp 500,000 to the local TPS operators.

Head of South Jakarta Cleanliness Sub-Department, Zaenal Syarifuddin explained his sub-department has difficulties to overcome illegal levies in his zone. This is because, TPS processing in all citizen residential are fully controlled by local operators, RT, RW, urban village and sub-district apparatuses without any intervention from the South Jakarta Cleanliness Sub-Department.

"Just check out such practice. Our party is reluctant to involve in the TPS management. As you know, garbage men just work with wearing shabby clothes and live from trash," he uttered.
