Slipi Jaya Market Needs Repair

The condition of Slipi Jaya Market on Jalan Anggrek Garuda, Kemanggisan Urban Village, Palmerah Sub-District, West Jakarta, is severely damaged and needs to be repaired by PD Pasar Jaya. Its wood frame on the plafond on second floor is weathering due to termites and water runoff from the leaking roof. As a result, the second floor is never functioned since five years ago because many plywood collapsed.

Anton (45), owner of a printing business on the first floor of Slipi Jaya Market, said once there were cinema on the second floor of the market, billiard arena, and arcade game centre. But since the market management went bankrupt five years ago, the building is no longer functioned until its ceilings finally damaged.

“If rain, the ceiling will leak to the ground,” he told, Friday (10/3).

Responding on this matter, Head of Slipi Jaya Market, Yusuf, acknowledged that the market is not feasible to use. The damages of the building, especially on the ceilings and plafond on the second floor, are very bad. Because of that, PD Pasar Jaya plans to repair the damages next month.

“Information from the head office said that all damaged and leaked ceilings will be repaired this October because the budget has been disbursed,” he stated.

According to Yusuf, the life period of Slipi Jaya Market building was already ended in 2010. Since then, the market with capacity of 750 kiosks is never been re-arranged. Many kiosks have been shut down, but 400 kiosks are still active.

“Each floor is just 30 percent occupied, while the basement is empty with only 10 kiosks occupied. Those are spare parts kiosks,” he disclosed.

Yusuf admitted concerned about the market quiet condition. In addition to lost competition with Slipi Jaya Plaza right across the street, Slipi Jaya Market building which has been operating since 20 years ago now is now badly damaged. Moreover, since its parking lot is not managed, the area around the 6,000-square meter market is chaotic because illegal parking is rampant.

“So far, we can only maintain the market’s cleanliness, can be seen there is no garbage strewn. For the maintenance fee, we charge Rp 4,000 a day (per merchant),” he uttered.
