Anies - MUI and DMI Promulgates Procedures of Idul Adha Mass Prayers and Qurban Animal Slaughtering

Jakarta Governor Anies Baswedan together with Jakarta Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI) Chairman KH Munahar Muchtar and Jakarta Indonesian Mosque Council (DMI) Chairman KH Makmun al-Ayubi, held virtual socialization about mass prayers for Idul Adha (Day of Sacrifice) and qurban animal slaughtering amid COVID-19 pandemic.

This condition requires us to survive

Besides promoting MUI's fatwa number 36/2020 on Idul Adha prayers and animal slaughtering in the pandemic, the governor had handed over 50,000 eco-friendly containers, namely bamboo baskets for qurban meat to be distributed to mosques and various animal-slaughtering locations in Jakarta.

"This condition requires us to survive, on the one hand, carrying out and practicing everything related to qurban worship, on the other hand this is an opportunity to ensure that our brothers are entitled to receive qurban meat, accept and all of them pass the responsibility to carry out the qurban in a healthy and safe condition," he expressed, at Jakarta City Hall, Wednesday (7/29), as quoted by Jakarta PPID's press release.

He asserted that all the health protocols for mass prayers and qurban worship had been compiled completely yet the consistency in its application would be a challenge that must be resolved together. Therefore he hoped that it could be implemented with discipline.

The main health protocols that must be met include;

1. During the slaughter of qurban animals, the number of the qurban committee must be limited, no crowd, must wear masks and keep a distance

2. The process of selling qurban animals must be done within a safe distance. The process is recommended through an authorized channel committee/agency, or conducted online thus the potential for interaction can be minimized

3. Communities who are at risk of not being in the location of slaughtering, especially children, elderly people and people without symptoms (OTG)

4. All qurban meat to the mustahiq can be distributed through the committee

"We want it to run smoothly like Eid al-Fitr before. We worry that the case will surge before Eid al-Fitr if discipline is not maintained. Alhamdulillah that did not happen. Hopefully Idul Adha can run smoothly this year and there will be no surge in cases," he explained.

In that occasion, he also showed the latest official COVID-19 cases in Jakarta that was relatively under control by massive testing and tracking of positive cases during transitional PSBB. He asserted, residents who were exposed to the virus could finally be handled through the self-isolation or underwent treatment in the health facility.

"And allow me to say thank you and give high appreciate to Jakarta MUI that has issued its fatwa about mass prayers for Idul Adha and animal slaughtering amid coronavirus. MUI's fatwa number 36/2020 must be used as a reference for us as Jakarta is still one of the places where positive COVID-19 cases still occur," he stated.
