Thousand Islands Commits to Eliminate Open Defecation

The way to build good sanitation is to work together between DPOs

As we know, open defecation has devastating consequences on health, on the dignity and protection of women and children, and the economy, due to poor sanitation.

Therefore, on this occasion, the Thousand Islands Regency administration declares a campaign to end open defecation (OD).

The declaration was directly led by the Thousand Islands Regent Junaedi and attended by related regional organizations (OPD) at the Mitra Praja Office, North Jakarta.

The regent said, as an area that became a pilot area for healthy sanitation, residents were urged to keep the environment clean. The Thousand Islands should be a clean and comfortable tourist spot.

"The way to build good sanitation is to work together between DPOs. That means, if there are health problems, it can be resolved quickly through synergy between DPOs and stakeholders," he expressed, Thursday (12/10).

Thousand Islands Health Sub-agency Head Herwin Meifendy added, the campaign to end open defecation is a sign of a change in behavior as a result of mentoring the Healthy Living Community Movement (Germas) and Community-Based Total Sanitation (STBM) programs.

He assessed, based on the evaluation results, there had been a significant improvement in healthy sanitation in Pari Island, Harapan Island and Untung Jawa Island urban villages.

"Since November 2020, there have been no more people defecating in those three urban villages, we give an award," he stated.
