70 Percent of Air Pollution Caused by Motor Vehicles

The increasing growth of motor vehicles every year does not only contribute to traffic congestion, but also has an impact on city’s air quality. As recorded by East Jakarta Environment Office (KLH), the air in the municipality nowadays contains heavy carbons, namely CO, SO2, and MO, which produced by motor vehicles’ exhaust fumes.

“70 percent of air pollution is caused by motor vehicles’ exhaust fumes, namely CO, SO2, and MO,” stated Head of East Jakarta KLH Monitoring and Control Division, Jumontang, Thursday, (11/13).

Through the urban air quality evaluation (EKUP), Jumontang continued, his party also recorded three areas which air pollution rate is high. Those areas are Cakung, Jatinegara, and Pasar Rebo. To anticipate increasing air pollution, East Jakarta KLH conducts four prevention steps, namely air measurement, vehicle emission testing, fuel testing, and traffic quantities.

“Besides moving objects like motor vehicles, 30 percent of air pollution is contributed by non moving objects like factory. There are 700 factories in JIEP area, East Jakarta, which contribute SO2 6.80 ug/Nm3, NO 10.90 ug/Nm3, PM 2.5, and PM 10,” he uttered.
