Variety of Vegetable and Fruit Seeds Planted Simultaneously in Thousand Islands

Variety of vegetable and fruit seeds were planted simultaneously today in Thousand Islands as a part of collaborative action of Simultaneous Planting Activity Throughout Jakarta 2021 which held virtually to commemorate World Environment Day.

More urban farming activities in Thousand Islands are expected to achieve food self-sufficiency

Thousand Islands Assistant in Administration, Economy, and Development (Asminekbang), Iwan P. Samosir said, this event involved 27 members of Ketapang Indah RW 01 Women Farmers Group. Besides, this activity also collaborated with Al-Falah Foundation on Kelapa Island by utilizing 774 square meters land in two locations.

"More urban farming activities in Thousand Islands are expected to achieve food self-sufficiency, it means not depending on supplies from outside of region," he conveyed, Friday (6/4).

1,313 People Participate in Simultaneous Planting Activity

He hopes Jakarta KPKP Agency can continue providing assistance and seeds, especially for farmer groups (poktan) in Thousand Islands.

"Hopefully in the future, Thousand Islands can fulfill residents' need for vegetables and fruits," he added.

Thousand Islands KPKP Sub-agency Head, Devi Lidya informed, 50 banana trees, 550 chili seeds, 50 eggplant seeds, and 500 sweet potato slips were planted in this event.

"Apart from Kelapa Island, Simultaneous Planting Event also involves Poktan Hijau Lestari in Pramuka Island and Poktan Pulau Tidung Kecil," she mentioned.

Until now, total 26 fostered farmer groups have been formed with varied agricultural land areas.

"The wider urban farming area, the wider urban farming community will not only make the environment greener, but also help families to fulfill their nutrition," she stated.

On the same occasion, Jakarta KPKP Agency Acting Head, Suharini Eliawati said, she was ready to develop urban farming in Thousand Islands and hoped Kelapa Island, which was proclaimed as an independent island for food security, could soon be realized.

"We hopes Kelapa Island can become one of agricultural-producing areas in Jakarta," she closed.
