Waste Sorting Movement Campaign Begins in 23 Traditional Markets

The North Jakarta Environment (LH) Sub-agency has started campaigning for the waste sorting movement to 23 traditional markets.

North Jakarta LH Sub-agency Head Achmad Hariadi mentioned the campaign targeted market administrators to form teams and build waste sorting facilities.

"They are preparing the team and facilities this week," he added, Wednesday (6/1).

Commission D Encourages RDF to Overcome Waste Problem

To support the movement, his side collaborated with several environmental groups, such as maggot activists, animal feed activists, and biodigester activists.

"This is collaborative work. Organic waste will be collected and transported to environmental groups thus it can be useful," he conveyed.

He would also coordinate with Perumda Pasar Jaya to provide eco-friendly waste bags to separate inorganic and organic waste at every kiosk in traditional markets.

"This bag will be used to sort organic and inorganic waste thus it doesn't scatter. Organic waste will be used by environmental activists, while inorganic waste with value goes to waste bank, and waste that has no value will be channeled to waste alms movement," he explained.

North Jakarta Secretary Abdul Khalit expected the waste sorting movement was a commitment to reducing waste from the source. LH Sub-agency would also assist and evaluate the progress in traditional markets.

"We support this movement. Moreover, traditional markets in North Jakarta are a part of the Jakarta Government under the management of Perumda Pasar Jaya. They must be a role model for other markets," he asserted.

Perumda Pasar Jaya Area 14 Manager Febri Rozaldi was optimistic about waste sorting implementation in 23 traditional markets throughout North Jakarta.

"We are optimistic that it can be implemented, starting from educating the traders to change from disposing of waste to sorting waste," he closed.
