Residents Urged to Avoid Electrical Hazards During Puddles

The Jakarta Regional Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBD) urges residents who live in flood-prone areas immediately turn off the electricity from the Meter Circuit Breaker (MCB) on the kWh meter when the water starts to soak their homes.

They were also encouraged to evacuate to a safer place to minimize the risk of electric shock.

"We also urge them if there is a flood not to hold the socket or objects that generate other electric currents around their homes so they don't get electrocuted," stated Jakarta BPBD Head, Isnawa Adji, Wednesday (11/30).

His party always coordinates with PLN regarding the cut off of electricity for areas or areas that are being flooded or inundated.

"We immediately coordinated with PLN to cut off electricity from the substations in areas that have the potential to cause inundation," he stated.

The public can also request a power cut through the Jakarta Siaga 112 or PLN 123 call center services. They were also urged to continue to monitor information about extreme weather via social media and the BPBD website

"It is because we always inform about changes in the weather that can later have an impact or have the potential to cause flooding or potential disasters," he explained.

Previously, a resident of Bintaro Resident, Pesanggrahan, South Jakarta died after being electrocuted when his house was inundated, Monday (11/28).

The victim with the initials LM (35) died due to electric shock when he was about to pull out a switch that was submerged in water with a water level of 60 centimeters.

Departing from this incident, the South Jakarta Mayor, Munjirin, appealed to residents in flood-prone areas to avoid objects that generate electricity and evacuate to a safe place during a flood.

He explained that PLN had cut off electricity in flood-prone areas according to procedures.

"The SOP is already in PLN when there is a request to turn it off, just do it. It must be immediately because it is dangerous, " he explained.

He added that his party would provide compensation to the families of victims of electric shock in Bintaro.

"Yesterday, the urban village and sub-district heads took care of giving compensation," he stated.
