The Jakarta Industry Trade Cooperatives and Small and Medium Enterprises Agency (PPKUKM) launched a sudden inspection (sidak) on imported used clothing against entrepreneurs in Senen Market, Central Jakarta, Thursday (3/30).

Consumer literacy needs to be strengthened

Jakarta PPKUKM Agency cooperates with Polda Metro Jaya Regional Police PPNS Coordinator to control imported used clothing and provide outreach to consumers and sellers of imported used clothing.

Jakarta PPKUKM Agency Head, Elisabeth Ratu Rante Allo said this action was done to inform the public about the impact of using used clothes and coaching small sellers to look for other types of businesses other than used clothes that have been traded so far.

"Moreover, the imported used clothing products are not permitted to be traded, according to Trade Ministry Number.51/M-DAG/PER/7/2015 on Prohibition of Imported Used Clothing. Article 3, states that used clothes that arrive in the territory of Indonesia must be destroyed by statutory provisions," she asserted.

According to her, another option for these sellers is to take part in the Jakpreneur entrepreneurship program according to Gubernatorial Regulation Number 2/2020 on Implementation of Integrated Entrepreneurship Development.

"Where there is P7, it will be successful, namely registration, training, assistance, licensing, marketing, financial reporting, and capital for Jakpreneur member participants," she continued.

He added that the sellers were still allowed to sell. With note, the scale of the business is still small and the person concerned has already stocked up on goods. It was conveyed by Cooperatives and Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) Minister, Teten Masduki at a press conference on Monday (3/27).

The government's current focus was on cracking down on the illegal import of used clothes. If the import of used clothes is eradicated, the space for selling these products will get smaller.

"Consumer literacy needs to be strengthened to protect local domestic products and provide an understanding that there are legal risks if selling illegal products," she closed.
