Seribu Islands Boosts Sea Monitoring

The Seribu Islands Maritime, Agriculture and Food Security Agency (KPKP) together with the Maritime Division is improving security at sea on shipping operations related to licensing documents, fishing gear, and fishing routes.

This aims to follow up on reports from the Seribu Islands community

Seribu Islands KPKP Sub-agency Head, Devi Lidya said the sea monitoring is conducted based on the Maritime and Fishery Ministry Number 59/2020 on Fishing Routes and Determination of Fishing Gear in the Fisheries Management Area around 12 Miles from the Nearest Island.

"This aims to follow up on reports from the Seribu Islands community regarding a squid fishing boat that was too close to the shoreline of about four miles," he said, Friday (4/14).

He explained it was focused around the waters of Kelapa Island, Harapan Island, and Papateo Island from April 11-13, 2023.

From the patrol results, four vessels were found with details of three vessels using squid fishing gear and one vessel using a prying chart.

"In this case, we also check all their operational documents to maintain security and safety," he continued.

Of four vessels, three violated fishing lane regulations by fishing too close to resident islands.

Those vessels, which had come from Muara Angke, North Jakarta, had been given a warning not to violate the fishing line again. If violations were found, they would be sanctioned.

"Hopefully, it can increase fishermen's awareness to comply with shipping regulations regarding fishing lanes and ship document equipment," he asserted.
