Steel Factory Chimney Sealed in Tackling Jakarta Pollution

Over the past two weeks, the Jakarta Environment Agency (LH) has taken action against four industries linked to the city’s worsening air. 

We sealed the chimney to repair it to meet standards. They can operate again if they can show the Certificate of Operational Suitability (SLO)

But only recently, the Legal Supervision and Compliance Division (PPH), as well as the Environmental Monitoring Officer (PPLH) for Jakarta DLH, sealed the chimney of the steel smelting company, PT Jakarta Central Asia Steel. It happened on Wednesday (9/13) based on the Jakarta LH Agency's Decree Number e-0154/2023 on the Implementation of Government Coercive Administrative Sanctions on PT Jakarta Central Asia Steel, dated Friday, September 8, 2023.

Jakarta LH Agency Head, Asep Kuswanto revealed his party had previously given administrative sanctions. These sanctions were then upgraded to sealing and stopping the operation of the reheating chimney within a predetermined period. If not, the company's environmental permit would be frozen or revoked.

"We sealed the chimney to repair it to meet standards. They can operate again if they can show the Certificate of Operational Suitability (SLO)," he expressed, as quoted by Jakarta PPID's press release.

As for the information, there were findings of violations in the use of chimneys at the company which did not comply with standards. Based on the rules, the use of a reheating chimney must have a Certificate of Suitability for Operation (SLO).

Officers will continue to make sweeping industries that contribute to air pollution. By 2030, it is targeted that all industries in Jakarta must truly have environmentally friendly standards.

"Everything has been regulated in Governor's Decree Number 576/2023 on Air Pollution Control Strategies. All industries in Jakarta must have low emissions," he closed.
